On Semiconductor has acquired Axsem AG (Duebendorf, Switzerland), a vendor of sub-gigahertz radio chips, for an undisclosed sum.

Axsem was founded in 2000 and has developed several RF ICs for high volume communications including for SigFox, EnOcean, wireless M-Bus and proprietaty standards. These RF transceivers complement On Semiconductor' existing 2.4 GHz (ZigBee) and wired (MBus, KNX and HART) offerings. The Axsem portfolio supports the Internet of Things (IoT), automatic meter reading, home automation, sensor networks and satellite communication markets.

"Adding AXSEM's low-power RF chips, microcontroller technologies and system experience to our Applications Product Group is another step towards expanding the company's presence in the high-growth industrial IoT segment," said Bob Klosterboer, EVP, Application Products Group in a statement.
